CREATION OF AN E-LEARNING MODULE ON WELLBEING FOR TRAINEES STEPPING UP TO SENIOR TRAINING ROLES

P. Carr, Workplace Health & Wellbeing Unit, HSE, Dublin, Ireland

Background:

Burnout rates for Basic Specialist (BST) and Higher Specialist (HST) trainees were 38% in a 2017 study(1). Transition to senior roles can be a stressful time for trainees(2). The RCPI is currently revising the curriculum of courses for BST/HST trainees, and a gap in teaching has been identified at this step up point.

Methods:

The request was to create a 20-minute online brief module on time management and burnout. The aim was to provide trainees with practical information regarding time management, burnout causes and supports available for prevention/treatment.

Results:

Two 10-minute modules were created on the requested topics.

Time Management:

Using the framework by Gordon & Borkan(3) trainees were provided with structured information on time management across four concepts: 1. Goal Setting, 2. Task Prioritisation, 3. Planning and Organisation, 4. Avoiding Procrastination. They were provided with evidence based methods for time management such as SMART goal setting (4), and Covey’s Time Matrix Technique for time management(5).

Burnout:

This was a refresher module as trainees had already been introduced to the concepts previously. Burnout causes were reviewed, and supports highlighted. Specific focus was given to empower trainees as more senior doctors to influence organisation change by modelling of behaviour and changing organisational culture.

Implications for Practice:

Providing education and support prior to developing problems aims to empower trainees, and prevent development of burnout, sick leave and presentation to occupational health practices. This will roll out for trainees stepping up in 2024 and feedback will be sought after.
