Background

Acknowledging the pivotal role of employment for individuals with physical long-term conditions (pLTCs), we conducted a comprehensive scoping review focusing on sickle cell disease (SCD), cystic fibrosis (CF), severe asthma (SA), and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) to better understand work participation patterns and relevant interventions for this population.

Aims

The aims of the review were to (i) assess current work participation knowledge, (ii) identify work-related interventions including the rationale, context and timing, and (iii) evaluate intervention effectiveness.

Methods

Following PRISMA-ScR guidelines, we conducted a systematic literature search across six databases and four grey literature sources. Inclusion criteria were studies reporting work-related information for adults (>16 years) with SCD, CF, SA or IBD, published between January 2003 – December 2023. We included quantitative and qualitative research; reports from non-academic sources (i.e. blogs) were excluded. The search strategy is available via the Open Science Framework (https://osf.io/qbh3c/).

Two reviewers independently evaluated titles and abstracts after de-duplication to identify relevant articles, followed by independent full-text screening. The review is ongoing, with data extraction and narrative synthesis to follow in duplicate.

Results

Total following de-duplication (After Title & Abstract Screening):

1) Databases – SA: 13,999 (300), CF: 12,930 (185), IBD: 5,842 (168), SCD: 2,478 (56).

2) Grey Literature – SA: 3,116 (83), CF:1,976 (62), IBD: 93 (18), SCD: 145 (26).

We have identified 898 papers for full-text screening.

Conclusion

Anticipated outcomes, encompassing varied interventions and measures, will guide the development of a work participation enhancement intervention for adults with pLTCs, funded by NIHR.
